Poor form for a new blog I know, but I’m currently involved in some training which means I’m not at my computer for a few days, so I’m missing quite a lot of interesting stuff. For the few people that keep up here (i know you’re there, I have stats), I’ll get back on the case by the weekend. I really should promote this in some way, to get more people looking. If any of you guys want to do it, go for it ;)

Anyway…coming up for discussion at the weekend: finality on James Hollman, this Valentin Iliev fella, more transfer speculation and some reaction to the Bury match, including my friends interesting insight on Roeder’s decision to put Russell at right-back.

I hope to see you soon.

It’s Like Christmas in Winter

Confirmed News

A busy day for Neil Doncaster and Glenn Roeder it seems. Mo Camara is here to stay until the end of the season and Tommy Wright of Ballymena United is the new GK coach, wrapping up the done deals for the morning. As for the afternoon, a never ending press conference seems to be wrapping up at Carrow Road and the word is that a permanent deal has been done for Matty Pattison (3 year contract) while Ryan Bertrand has come in on loan from Chelsea for the rest of the season. To the former, brilliant news. Patty has been fantastic in his loan spell and a permanent deal is exactly what we and he needed. As ever, the price is undisclosed.

For Bertrand, I have to admit I don’t know too much about the player. He has had previous loan spells at Bournmouth and Oldham and must have impressed for Roeder to want him in for the rest of the season. The official website calls him a left-sided defender, which would suggest cover for Camara, but his Wiki calls him an attacking fullback converted from a winger, so is Roeder giving Huckerby a kick up the arse here? Are we expecting a little more competition for Darren, who was on the bench against Crystal Palace, or are the rumours of a move to the USA true?

Also, I wonder if they were signed in time to play tomorrow..

The Goalkeeping Coach Situation

The situation with the Goalkeeping Coach is interesting, with rumours flying around message boards and word of mouth like lightning. I first heard about it last week, a friend of mine commenting that Bryan Gunn was warming up the keepers and taking Hollman’s usual place on the sidelines for the last couple of home games. Aside from the Bryan Gunn lottery of ‘Which job will he have next?’, it is interesting to see such an influential and seemingly successful coach sidelined. The only factual source I can find is on the EDP website, a quote from a News Conference at the end of last year, in which Roeder says:

“When we have something more definite to say we will.

“Gunny is helping out because he has got great experience in that position. I think he enjoyed himself this past week or so where he has helped Marshy and the other goalkeepers.

“When we can say something official we will do and then get on with things.”

Nothing has since been said, though with the new appointment it becomes pretty clear that he does indeed not have a future at the club, and personally I think this is a great shame. He is the coach mainly responsible (along with the academy kings) for the development of Robert Green, Joe Lewis and now England U-17 and U-16 stars Steven Arnold and Declan Rudd.

What I find more interesting is the manner in which the whole thing seems to have been done. No press statement, no news to the EDP or Evening News, nothing on the club website apart from the announcement of the new coach, not a word. It all seems hushed and rushed, like he’s being quietly escorted out of the back door with minimal fuss while the Old Boy’s Club gets together to find a replacement. When Roeder first came in, Duffy was let go and a statement made. When Martin Hunter left, we knew about it. When we have lost coaches in the past like Boothroyd, we have known about it. Why not now? It does a disservice to James Hollman, and makes people like myself become mistrustful of the powers that run the club.

Other Stuff

Hearts are apparently after another yes-man to be Romanov’s puppet. I didn’t even realise they were managerless, but of course, if you want an inexperienced Scottish coach, Peter Grant is your man. Shock candidate indeed.

It looks like Joe Lewis is definitely off. I can’t blame him for wanting first team football and Posh are on the way up (at least one rung), but I don’t think the bid should have been accepted in the first place.

By the looks of my stats page (which you can’t see), a lot of people came here yesterday and today from Wrath of the Barclay, and to you, hello. I’d encourage you to bookmark or favourite this site. I probably won’t be breaking any stories quicker than you guys, but my analysis is a damn sight better than any of the three-toed mouth breathers you find on most internet forums.

Transfer Activity

No word on the official website yet, but could it be that we’ve accepted a bid for arguably the only good prospect coming out of our academy? The Evening News is reporting that Joe Lewis is ‘considering’ a move to Posh for £400k, which would suggest that we’ve let him consider it.

If so, I have to say, I love the far-sightedness of this move. Another notch on our ambitious belt. Is David Marshall really expected to be here in say 2, 3 years time if we aren’t playing Premiership football or at least challenging fiercely for it? Are we then going to look for another goalkeeper? Why not, seeing as we go through so many. Joe Lewis has been on the City horizon since he was 15, an understudy to Robert Green and trained by the same man.. It’d let down the Academy if he were let go without a single pro appearance…

Elsewhere, apparently Rowan Vine is splitting taxi fair with Martin Taylor in search of a new home, and he wouldn’t be too shabby a signing for us. Also, what ever happened to Calum Davenport?

23:12 - Those tossbags down at QPR have signed Fitz Hall. Is there anyone they aren’t trying to buy?

00:23 - No.  It would be nice to buy someone before they get everyone.

Coming soon: Jason Shackell unleashes the dragon, the Jamie Cureton Confidence-O-Meter and what’s going on with James Hollman? Stay tuned.

Crystal Palace 1 - 1 Norwich

I got my wish.

Fantastic to see Lee Croft get a start and snatch it with both hands with an excellent performance. By all accounts, it was a match we more than held our own in and perhaps deserved more from, which you’d never have thought was possible just a few short weeks ago. Some thoughts:

Darren Huckerby: The maestro is turning into more and more of a square peg. He came on for a few minutes at the end and didn’t really do much, but it’s quite a statement to put him on the bench in the first place, and he’s there simply because of more influential performances by players like Russell and Pattison. He needs to start pulling his finger out a little bit more; the talent is there, but he’s getting a bit lazy. Maybe he’s dreaming of LA.

Loan Signings: Sign them up, please. At least keep Evans and Camara for the rest of the season, but please pick up Matty Pattison and Tiny Taylor permanently. Jimmy Smith I don’t really care about. He’s done nothing to impress me.

The Transfer Window: Anti-competitive as it is, it’s here so we need to deal with it, and for Norwich there are 2 areas we need to improve. Centre Back and Centre Forward. Trim the fat from the PG era (Strihavka, Murray, Brown) and bring in some fresh faces. Martin Taylor or Fitz Hall at the back would be lovely, Shola Ameobi, Jason Roberts, hell even bring Earnie back on loan or something, it’s not like he’s getting games at Derby. We need someone who can put the ball in the net. For a leading scorer, Cureton never looks able. Personally, I’d love to see McKenzie back…

Shackell & Doherty: If the Doc was home grown and Shackell was bought, people would sing a very different tune. Gary Doc has been inspirational for us this season and Shackell consistently…ok. Good performances now and then, with costly mistakes scattered. I don’t want to see him leave but with some Norwich fans somehow thinking he’s a Prem CB in the making, they need to wise up a little. He needs a lot of work.

A good performance, and a good lead up to a morale-boosting win over Bury to come this weekend. Or have I just jinxed that one…

Morning

It is the first day of a new year, and the time for this to begin. I will get to grips with the technical side as things go along, make it more professional and such. But suffice to say, this is a Norwich City FC journal, written by a die-hard fan that, due to location problems, hasn’t been to a match since Worthington was in charge.

Today we face Crystal Palace. I’ll be happy with a draw. And for the love of the Delia, please start Lee Croft…
